NFIB State Director Jeff Burdett ushered in the start of the 89th Texas Legislative Session by outlining several small business priorities for lawmakers, including inventory tax relief, tort and regulatory reform, and workforce development.

“Ensuring the Lone Star State remains a friendly small business state requires lawmakers to understand small employers' unique challenges,” Burdett noted. “Two years ago, the Legislature made real strides to reduce Texans’ tax and regulatory burden. Although Main Street is more optimistic about the economy, inflation continues to put pressure on costs while small business owners are struggling to find qualified applicants.

More must be done to ensure our small businesses can create more jobs, expand their operations, and thrive. Main Street businesses are hopeful the Legislature will focus on passing meaningful inventory tax relief, promoting a balanced civil justice system, reducing additional regulations, and bolstering our skilled workforce.”

Helping Entrepreneurs Succeed

To support this philosophy, the Better Business Bureau’s Education Foundation has developed innovative initiatives as part of a comprehensive 12-year master plan to enhance support for Texas entrepreneurs and reduce failure rates.

A cornerstone initiative is the Ignite Accelerator Program. This tech-enabled co-working space, set to launch in Austin and Fort Worth, will serve as a hub for innovation, collaboration and community among Texas entrepreneurs. Ignite is not focused on teaching industry-specific skills; instead, it emphasizes building robust business foundations. By equipping entrepreneurs with the knowledge and tools to develop strong, resilient businesses, Ignite aims to improve survival rates and foster opportunities and prosperity across the state.

Small businesses, which comprise 99% of all businesses in the state, employ over half of the private sector workforce, and play a crucial role in propelling Texas forward.
