Dallas Business Law Attorney Goes Over the Challenges and Opportunities of the Trump Presidency

Dallas business law attorney, Richard “Ric” Armstrong, explores the intriguing prospects of President-Elect Trump.

What will his presidency mean for Texas entrepreneurs? For the economy? For the future of our nation?

Many Americans consider Donald Trump a wild card – he’s unpredictable and different from any other president in American history. This worries some and comes as a relief to others. As a business owner, you may be wondering whether you should be worried or excited about a Trump presidency. The obvious answer is: it depends! Let’s unpack the pros and cons…

Potential Challenges Under Trump

• Trump has taken a strong position that importing goods prevents American businesses from producing their own goods, so business owners who rely on imports could face unprecedented challenges with a Trump presidency.

• Trump has criticized many countries (e.g. China and Mexico) for taking advantage of international trade deals, such as the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), and putting the United States in unfair economic binds. Some worry that his unvarnished rhetoric might provoke a trade war or at least ice relations with influential partners, such as China, and that American businesses and the economy as a whole could suffer as a result.

Possible Opportunities Under Trump

• Trump campaigned hard on the theme of “let’s bring jobs back to the U.S. from overseas” – and clearly that theme resonated with millions. If he’s indeed able to fulfill even part of this promise, the downstream effects on the economy could be quite positive, and many business owners will benefit.

• Along those lines, Trump aims to incentivize companies for keeping their production in the U.S.

• Trump has also promised to cut business taxes and lift regulations that hamstring many small businesses in various industries. These actions could allow business owners to operate with reduced costs and regulatory concerns. But as with all changes in the law that affect small business,  business owners are well advised to consult with their business law attorney concerning ways that those changes will impact their own business, and how they should respond.

Even with Republicans firmly in control of both houses of Congress and the Presidency, we face an uncertain political future ahead. 1. What is so upsetting to all who are business owners, and even people who are consumers, is that we just don’t know how things are going to go. There are so many question marks at this point. We all have our theories, but ultimately we will have to wait and see what happens. I am hopeful that your positives list comes true.
